This recipe was truly a joy to create. I wanted to create a cookie recipe that was far more than ‘just another cookie recipe’, so I added turmeric root to an orange chocolate cookie recipe I was working on. Have you heard that turmeric root is the ‘new’ superfood? The health benefits of adding more turmeric to your diet are diverse. It’s been shown to have antidepressant properties, anti-inflammatory properties, diabetes fighting, and even cancer fighting properties.

Organic, non-irradiated turmeric is the purest and most powerful form you can purchase it in. High-concentration pills are also available. But I find that eating turmeric powder in a cookie, especially a chocolate orange cookie makes me very happy. I now have total justification to binge on these cookies….aher, emmm, I mean eat a couple extra. 🙂 Frontier Co-op sells non-GMO turmeric root powder along with several other really great spices and flavorings that are all non-irradiated, organic, and just pure goodness in a jar.

I am definitely a fan of chocolate oranges; I eat untold numbers of them around the holidays (everyone has their weakness…don’t judge). I had the idea a few weeks ago to create a cookie recipe that would taste just like the real deal. Plus I wanted to try out the new cookie stamps that I received in my swag bag from Everything Food Conference last May.

People often eat more oranges when they’re feeling icky; besides Vitamin C, oranges have a bright uplifting flavor that can lift the spirit as well as the immune system. There are many ways to get orange flavorings into your food~ with orange juice and zest being the most common. But I noticed that the chocolate oranges at the store were flavored with orange extract, which I used when creating this recipe.

I’m really proud of this recipe for Healing Chocolate Orange Cookies: these cookies are spot on~ they taste exactly like a chocolate orange you’d purchase in the store! Made from scratch with added turmeric root these cookies are a special treat to give yourself and a lovely gift to share with someone special. They are truly healing~ which is something we all need, as individuals, families, and a nation.

I hope you love, love, love this recipe. I know I’ll be making up another batch soon to give away to friends and family. Just imagine giving these cookies away and how delighted the recipient will be to learn just how much healing to body and soul these cookies really can be.

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 16 oz semi-sweet baker’s chocolate, chopped
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Orange Extract
  • zest from 1 large orange
  • 10 Tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 and 1/4 cups brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Add the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and turmeric in a medium bowl and whisk lightly to combine.

  6. Mix in the chopped orange chocolate. Cover the cookie dough with plastic wrap and wait 30 mins for the dough to thicken.
  7. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Scoop out evenly and roll into balls with hands. Bake for about 10 minutes, or until the edges are set but the middle will still be soft. Let cool for 10 minutes on cookie sheet then move to a cooling rack and let cool to room temperature.
