Game Day Wontons

Game Day Wontons - The Goldilocks Kitchen

The biggest game day of the year is upon us already! Whaaaat??? Why not shake things up a bit from the traditional sausage cheese dip and make these Game Day Wontons instead! They’re the crunchy, savory finger food that your mouth has been missing and a great fit for a superbowl party. The best thing about them~ you can make them ahead of time, freeze them, and then fry them up at the perfect time so you have more time to keep your eyes on the game.

I love wontons. I developed my love for these little fried packages of goodness at a very early age. As a kid my mother and I would walk the few blocks to the nearest chinese restaurant to treat ourselves to some wontons or egg drop soup. We were very poor in those days but my mom really liked eating out, so we would splurge every so often. A habit she has passed on to me (for good or ill; probably more on the ill side…)

Folding wontons is really fun because there’s a lot of different ways to do it. You can’t really screw it up, just avoid putting too much filling in so it doesn’t ‘leak’ out while frying. Simply wet your finger and run it along all four edges of the wonton wrapper, then place in the middle approximately 1 teaspoon of filling.

Fold it in half and seal the edges with your fingers.

Locate the long edge that has the bulge from the filling. Wet the corners on either side and stick those two corners together. It should look something like the pic above; if it doesn’t, don’t sweat it~ it’s no big deal. Like I said there’s lots of different ways to fold wontons. Maybe you’ll create your own way :0)

I love to make wontons because they are super easy and have so many possibilities for stuffings. These Game Day Wontons have a cheesy crab rangoon stuffing drawing upon chip and dip recipes so popular for game day menus. Game Day Wontons are chips and dip all wrapped into one neat little package!

Description

These crunchy, savory little finger foods are perfect for watching the big game, or make a great appetizer for your next party. You can make them ahead of time and freeze them for up to 5 days until you’re ready to fry them up.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ lb imitation crab sticks or lump crab meat
  • 1 8 oz. package of cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of minced scallions or chives
  • 1 package of wonton wrappers
  • 23 cups vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Combine the crab, cream cheese, worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, sugar and scallions together in a mixing bowl.
  2. Pour vegetable oil in a cast iron skillet or other deep sided oven safe cookware to about 2 inches deep and set the heat to medium high. Once 350 degrees is reached, turn the heat down to maintain temperature.
  3. While the oil is heating up, prepare wontons by running a finger dipped in clean water along the edge of each wrapper. Place roughly 1 teaspoon of filling in the center. Fold and fry for about 2-3 minutes. Remove and place on paper towels. Serve immediately with any asian dipping sauce of choice.
