Are Berkey Water Filters Really That Good?

You’ll know if this portable water filtration system is right for you or not when you learn about my experience.

(I received trial products from Berkey Water Filters for this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.)

If you are looking for self-reliance products, or a multi-purpose water filter to keep from purchasing those annoying plastic water bottles, then you’ve heard about the Berkey. But is it worth the hefty price tag? I had a chance to thoroughly review this product over several weeks and I can give you my honest opinion. Is the Berkey water filter right for you? Read on to find out!

Yes, you should own a Berkey water filter if self-reliance and being prepared for emergencies are important to you, because of its outstanding ability to filter out dirt and pathogens (diseases, bacteria, etc.) from any water source, providing you with clean healthy drinking water. It is made with stainless steel and has upgraded to stainless steel spigots as well. Having good drinking water is just as important as Food storage, which many people forget!

What are the downsides of a Berkey Water filter?

The Berkey is best used in a stationary location near a water source and is not so great for travel as the filters inside can be broken if the unit is dropped. I would also say that replacement filters are not cheap, but the ones that do come with your initial purchase will last for quite a long time.

I will say that throughout our annual summertime adventures in Colorado, this small silver tank ensured that we had perfectly purified delicious water to drink, cook, wash with, etc. anywhere we went.

The ingenious gravity-fed water filters in the Berkey Purification system will remove 99.99% of all pathogenic material, viruses, heavy metals, and virtually anything unsafe, and provide H²O in its purest form for us to drink. You can read more about it here.

I also tested the Berkey filters by adding in various dyes (Mio flavorings) to our water, bad well water from an old cabin, and even stagnant pond water from the pond below. I wanted to make sure that if the world ‘Hit The Fan’ (you know what I mean) my family and I would be just fine. Each time the Berkey purification system proved to me it was the bee’s knees, the real deal as I opened the spigot and only pure-tasting clear water came out! It’s truly an outstanding product, leaving all other water purification systems in the dust! Literally. Just be sure to treat it with care, it is a bit fragile. Don’t let it tip over like I did- the spigot broke and one of the filters inside also broke.

If you’re the kind of person who loves being in the wilderness, shopping for the latest innovations in outdoor gear (I’m talking you REI people), or are a prepper at heart then I say to you- GET yourself a Berkey Water Purifyer ASAP. It could save your life one day. Or how about every day? Cuz you know, the fewer plastic water bottles filling up local landfills, the better for the environment amiright???

Sego family Summertime adventures

A Sego lily proudly shows its trifecta of white petals. We found fields full of them on our last adventure in Colorado. Our family name, however, doesn’t originate with this flower but is instead from the Middle Ages British Isles.

Speaking of summer adventures, I can hardly believe it’s time again for me to share my end of summer-fun blog post with you! How is 2019 going by so freakin’ fast!!?? I sooo did not go to Africa as mentioned above, but we did manage to make it up to Colorado a few times and up to Wyoming and Idaho too!

The Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad winds its way along the Osier Creek and through this valley.

I love being a blogger so much because it gives me the flexibility to do all these wonderful things with my family without having to ask ‘my boss’ for time off!

My family plus a couple of cousins at the Osier (ow-shure) train stop along the Cumbres and Toltec railroad.

Even though it’s still in the 90s here every stinkin’ day, I now say goodbye to summertime, and HELLO to back to school time and the fall/holiday season (yaaaaaaay my absolute favorite)!

    1. Hi Justina!

I think the Travel Berkey (the one I have) is supposed to comfortably support one or two people with drinking water (if there is a water source nearby), but the Big berkey can supply many more in an emergency. Any Berkey filter is great to have for day to day use, or any time you’re heading outdoors into the wilderness. Better to have a surplus of clean water than not enough, I say ;0).

  1. Hi,

I don’t really feel that a gravity filter is a good option when traveling. Instead a filter bottle is really compact and effective means to filter water on the go.

  2. I like that there is a portable water filter available anywhere. My wife and I travel a lot on the road and this can be truly useful for us. We would like an expert in Water Treatment Systems for Homes to help us in our household as well.

  3. The perfect solution for my traveling family instead of having to buy water from service stations regularly

  4. I like that there is a convenient water channel accessible anyplace. My better half and I travel a great deal out and about and this can be genuinely helpful for us. We might want a specialist in Water Treatment Systems for Homes to help us in our family unit too.

    1. Hi Cynthia,
Yes agreed! We will definitely be bringing our Travel Berkey back to our Colorado cabin again this summer.

  5. When it comes to considering a water filter, the Berkey water filter is the best for me. I am using the Big Berkey model. But, I am thinking to try their light model in the future. Thanks for your effort :)!

  6. Good review.

I am so grateful for my Berkey. I have wanted one of these for five years when I saw it at someone’s house, and tasted how much better the water was than Brita. Ah! So glad I have this.

  7. I’m still trying to figure out the best filter for fluoride. I know that the standard carbon filters are not effective in removing fluoride. I don’t know how effective stainless Berkey in removing fluoride.
