Did you know root beer floats were invented right here in the good old U.S. of A.? It makes sense since carbonated drinks and ice cream were also invented in the land of the free and the home of the brave. At some point, someone decided to see what would happen when you mixed them together and… a vital part of “the good ol’ days” our grandparents talk about was born. I loved root beer floats as a kid and they’re probably why I’m so addicted to root beer today. Celebrate the nostalgia with me on August 6th for National Root Beer Float Day!

I remember gathering around the kitchen table over A&W root beer floats as a kid in ‘the old Provo house’. This house I only lived in for 5 years, when I was 3 to 8 years old, but I remember it like it was yesterday; picking produce from our huge backyard garden, jumping on my parents’ bed, and dad mowing over an old Easter egg in the lawn I had forgotten about haha :0) It’s a good reminder to me that my kiddos are in that age range and I better make memories now for them to look back on with smiles on their faces!

Spend some quality time with your family.

I thought I’d recreate some of that great old nostalgia for my kids by having a “Root Beer Float Bar” in our kitchen with my dad, and creating a time capsule together where we would be able to save special memories and trinkets for our future selves. Getting all the supplies I needed was easy and inexpensive thanks to one-stop shopping at Walmart Supercenter. Did I mention that A&W root beer has always been my favorite soft drink? It’s true, just ask anyone in my family. My beverage of choice for sure!

My visit to my old childhood home was a reminder to me of how important it is for us to record what life is like in this day and age for ourselves~ our struggles, life changing events, and even day to day mundane things would be so important and fascinating to our posterity one day.

How to make a Family Night Root Beer Float bar.

I wanted to make it fun for my whole family, so here’s what I included:

  • A&W Regular Root Beer (2 liter)
  • marshmallows
  • chocolate sprinkles
  • graham cracker cookies
  • whipped cream
  • chocolate syrup
  • vanilla cream filled wafers (pralines)
  • chocolate and vanilla bean ice cream flavors
  • Maraschino cherries

I had to fight my family off with a stick just to get a few shots with my camera before I couldn’t hold them off any longer…

After we customized our floats we sat down with our pretty box and filled it with things that were important to each of us and represented this time in our lives. Miriam added a little necklace, the boys added projects/crafts and a Pokémon card, I added my business card, a little homemade hot air balloon (since I’ve been doing a lot of ballooning lately) and Camron added a couple feathers he’d collected and our family picture. Next time I’m at the store I plan to purchase a newspaper to add to our time capsule box.

The kids loved the A&W Family Night Root Beer Float Bar and being able to choose what to put in the time capsule. It was a perfect summer night activity and one to remember.
