This hearty, flavorful chili will be your new favorite! It is so dang good that you’d never know how healthy it is for you! But it would win a gold medal in both categories if it could, trust me.
I love making this easy turkey chili because I feel like I’m creating a gift of love for my family and friends. Seriously, this recipe has been a staple in my home for years because:
- It’s made with lean ground turkey, an excellent source of protein
- Freshly chopped onion and garlic make this stew taste like it’s from scratch (even though everything else is from a can or box)
- Both pinto beans and black beans add heartiness, additional protein, and flavor
- Simplicity: it’s just a three-step recipe!
It truly makes my heart happy to teach my family how to build great-tasting soups/stews loaded with flavor.
This turkey chili was a great starter recipe for my teenagers as they learned how to cook. They got some good practice chopping onions, working with fresh garlic, and learned about herbs and spices while keeping it simple. I could teach them that adding chicken broth, not water, further intensifies the flavors and marries everything together.
I know your family will love this recipe as much as mine does!

Em’s Chili Recipe
- Total Time: 45 minutes
- Yield: 6 bowls 1x
Description
You will love making this quick and easy recipe I adapted from a Biggest Looser program because you simply chop an onion and mince some garlic. The rest of the ingredients are in a can or box.
Ingredients
- 1 yellow onion, chopped
- 1 and 1/4 pounds lean ground turkey
- 1 (14.5oz) canned fire-roasted diced tomatoes, NOT drained
- 1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 (15 oz) can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
- 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh garlic
- 2 tablepsoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon mustard powder
- optional: sliced black olives or minced fresh chives to garnish
Instructions
- Coat a large Dutch oven with a few sprays of olive oil or other cooking spray. (You can use a large saucepan with a lid if you don’t have a dutch oven.) Heat on medium-high and add the onion. Season with a pinch of salt and saute until soft and just browning a bit.
- Add ground turkey and cook, breaking apart the turkey until no pink remains- 6 to 8 minutes.
- Add all other ingredients except for the olives into the pot or saucepan and stir to combine. Turn the heat to high until boiling and then turn to low. Cover and simmer for about 20 minutes.
- Remove from heat and serve into 1 cup servings and garnish with sliced olives.
Notes
Instant pot instructions:
Follow the recipe instructions above, using an Instant Pot set to saute, until step 3. Follow step 3, by locking the Instant Pot lid on and programming it to pressure cook for 4 minutes. Allow a natural pressure release for 5 minutes, then finish with the quick release. Open the lid and serve hot with garnishes if desired.

I love how this chili isn't overpoweringly tomato, don't get me wrong I love that particular nightshade but who wants to feel like they are eating noodle-less spaghetti? Good mix of beans, loved the turkey.
