What size skewer should you use to make fruit kabobs? ANY SIZE YOU WANT. Most bamboo skewers are going to be around 8 to 10 inches long. That’s what I used for the photos in this blog post. If you want mini skewers, try looking at your local party store or on Amazon for shorter ones. Mini fruit kabobs would be soooo cute!
Most folks will use a combination of ripe watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew for the melon portion of the skewers. If you want to keep it simple, stop there. They will already be a fun treat!
The Power of the Melon Baller
If you’ve never used a melon baller before, let me be the one to convert you. This tiny kitchen gadget may be sitting at the back of your junk drawer- and you don’t even know it’s there! (Ask me how I know…) A melon baller turns ordinary chunks of melon into perfect spheres that look like they came straight out of a magazine.
I couldn’t find my melon baller the day I scheduled this photoshoot, so I grabbed the next best thing, a small cookie dough scoop. It worked great too, saving the party and making these melon ball fruit skewers all the more juicy to eat since the chunks were a little bit bigger.
But if you want these melon skewers to have a more complex and sophisticated taste, consider adding small chunks of marinated fresh mozzarella, folded prosciutto slices, basil leaves, and a balsamic glaze drizzle like the picture below, to take these appetizers over the top!

- Coconut Cream Dip: Whip coconut cream with a little powdered sugar and lime zest. So tropical!
These dips can be set out in small ramekins, or you can even drizzle directly onto the kabobs, whichever you prefer!

Melon Fruit Skewers Recipe

Description
A fun and cute idea for serving ripe melon at a birthday party, summer barbecue, Easter, or a picnic! These sweet and salty melon skewers can be simple enough for kids to enjoy, or make them sophisticated by adding prosciutto and a balsamic vinegar drizzle.
Ingredients
- 1 seedless ripe watermelon
- 2 honeydew melons
- 2 cantaloupe melons
- 1 12–oz. container of fresh mozzarella marinated in olive oil and herbs/spices
- wooden skewers
- optional: prosciutto, mint, and balsamic vinegar glaze to garnish
Instructions
- Slice each melon in half, scooping out and discarding all seeds in the honeydew and cantaloupe.
- Using a melon baller or small cookie scoop, scoop each type of melon into three separate serving bowls.
- Place alternating types of melon onto skewers, adding optional mozzarella ball and prosciutto slice if desired. Chill for 30 minutes before serving. Serve with optional dipping sauces or drizzle.
Notes
These melon fruit skewers will keep for a few hours, but are best served within an hour of making them.
